we are developing a multi-level DC-DC converter for high power industrial application.

Input - 1.5 to 2.8kV
output- .950 to 1.45kV
. We want your suggestions for selecting the isolated gate driver IC that meets our requirements. Gate driver IC clearance should be 15.4mm.

    Hello DV_s,

Sure, a member of our technical team is looking into your question. Can you tell me about which MOSFETs you're using? Thanks!

we are planning to use CAB5R0A23GM4. For the gate driver we required 13kVpeak impulse isolation voltage (Reinforced isolation). Can you please suggest any solution for this isolation requirement.

    Hello DV_s,

Thanks for your interest in this product. Most designers are using the 2.3 kV WolfPACKs in 1500 V bus applications. In these applications, the Texas Instruments UCC21710 gate driver IC used on the Wolfspeed CGD1700HB2M-UNA gate driver board is sufficient.

Currently, we do not know a gate driver IC with the rated working voltage requirements that you mentioned. We are working with our gate driver partners to develop solutions to address this need in the future. There are still several options you can immediately employ though. First, you can pair a dedicated digital isolator with a gate driver IC. Isolators such as the Texas Instruments ISO7842 have a >2.8 kV working voltage rating and are close to your other design requirements (12.8 kV surge and >14.5 mm creepage). The digital signals such as PWM and FAULT signals can be transmitted via the isolator, and a dedicated gate driver IC can still modulate the power module. This is the approach we are adopting in our new higher-voltage rated gate driver design which will be released in the coming months. Second, you can use fiber optic signaling to create the isolation barrier. Many people use the Broadcom AFBR-2624Z family of transceivers for high-voltage gate driver applications. More information about using fiber for gate driver signaling is discussed in Section 4.3 of PRD-09301.

    Thanks,

    Chris N.
