Heatsink design
Hi all,
I was going through this reference design (https://www.wolfspeed.com/products/power/kit-crd-8ff65p/) and I am wondering why are there embossments on the heatsink. Do these serve any purpose other than creating some more clearance for the components placed on the bottom side of the board?
Moreover, is this a custom design made by Wolfspeed or can I find such heatsinks off the shelf?
Thank you in advance.
Best regards,
Kosta Kotsis

Greetings:
The embossments on the heatsink serve two purposes in this particular design. The first, as you mentioned, is to add creepage and clearance between the bottom of the pcb and heatsink. The second is the embossments combined with the five, nonconductive screws ensure enough pressure on the thermal pad for good heat transfer between the MOSFETs/pcb and the heatsink.
