Maximum board thickness for wolfpack series

Hello,

What would be the maximum board thickness for the GM3 wolfpack modules? I can see from reference design CRD25DA12N-FMC, that a total thickness of approx 2.4mm is obtained. I would like to know if there would be problems mounting these modules on a pcb with 2.7 or 2.8mm thickness.

thanks.

    Hi Duclair,

Most of our experience is derived from working with 93mil (~2.4mm) thickness boards. That being said I don't see any reason why FM / GM Wolfpack modules will not work with thicker PCBs provided that the guidelines in the Wolfpack mounting app note are adhered to, especially press-in forces and press-in speeds mentioned on page 9.

    Hi.

Is there a specification that can help provide a maximum threshold for the PCB thickness ?

For example, I am designing for the 200A GM3 modules, and to reach this king of current while keeping the hotspots on the PCB at reasonable temperatures, It seems I will need a 3oz with up to 10 layers, or a 5oz with up to 6 layers (2 layers used for gate drive...). now, with this, I am not sure what min/max core and prepreg thickness to use, but I may end up with a board reaching even 3mm.

Please, can you provide some insight on this?

    Hi Duclair,

Please note that going higher than 93mil means that you simply cannot press-out the module. Also pcb thickness can have issues with hole plating. If you don't need to press out and your board house can control the PCB hole quality with your desired PCB thickness, I don't see any reason why a higher PCB thickness is not possible.
