Question regarding drain pin usage

Hello,

I am designing a power bridge with the discretes C3M0016120K (TO247-4). I am wondering if there is any drawback on not using the drain pin and only using the pad as drain electrical contact. With my pre-design there is no room for the pin so I would consider cutting it…

Thanks a lot!!

    Greetings:

I have a few questions about your setup.

    1. Do you need to isolate the package from the heatsink?
    2. How do you plan to attach the package to the heatsink?

There's no reason why the drain pad couldn't be used as the electrical contact; however, it would make it difficult if not impossible to isolate the package from the heatsink. If you did need isolation between the package and heatsink, I'm not sure how you would make good electrical contact.
